Is this about Barbie or Society?

At first I was under the impression that these poems would be about barbies and their effect on society, but now I feel like Duhamel is merely using barbies in place of people so that she can make semi-controversial statements about them and society while appearing to talk about barbies. The Native American Barbie poem is blatently about the near extinction of Native Americans, and I think in the Hispanic Barbie poem seems to suggest that Hispanics are mostly illegal citizens and poor. In Oriental Barbie, Duhamel speaks of "round eyes" and "Geishas to Go." I know she's poking fun of Mattell, but I just don't see the purpose of her poems.
